Statistics of ENSO Past and Present: Comparing Climate Models to Coral Reconstructions
نویسندگان
چکیده
Figure 1: a) Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly (◦ C), 12/1997 McPhaden (1999). b) McGregor samples a fossil coral from Kiritimati, central equatorial Pacific. New wavelet-based statistical tools will be used to validate coupled climate models against coral reconstructions of the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) over the past few thousand years. These novel statistical techniques, developed at CIRES, have shown promise in validating climate models against modern observations, but the short duration of observations has limited the power of the method. Taking advantage of an opportunity for synergistic collaboration with Australian scientists, we will perform the first statistically robust diagnosis of ENSO model/data agreement on millennial timescales. The project has potential for leaps in understanding coupled climate model performance and ENSO response to climate forcing, and it will initiate new international and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Highly variable El Niño-Southern Oscillation throughout the Holocene.
The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) drives large changes in global climate patterns from year to year, yet its sensitivity to continued anthropogenic greenhouse forcing is uncertain. We analyzed fossil coral reconstructions of ENSO spanning the past 7000 years from the Northern Line Islands, located in the center of action for ENSO. The corals document highly variable ENSO activity, with no...
متن کاملAssessing the Paleoceanographic Potential of the Coral Montipora venosa at Fanning Atoll, Central Equatorial Pacific
As interest in global climate change increases, so does the need for better and more extensive climate proxies. The central equatorial Pacific has been established as the region with the largest ENSO-related sea surface temperature (SST) and precipitation (PPT) anomalies, which are known to impact global interannual climate variability. Of the coral-based paleo-reconstructions of ENSO and lower...
متن کاملAtmosphere-ocean dynamics in the Western Indian Ocean recorded in corals.
We present a set of Porites coral oxygen isotope records from the tropical and subtropical Western Indian Ocean covering the past 120-336 years. All records were thoroughly validated for proxy response to regional climate factors and their relation to large-scale climate modes. The records show markedly different imprints of regional climate factors. At the same time, all coral records show cle...
متن کاملOn the variability of ENSO over the past six centuries
[1] The instrumental record is too brief for evaluation of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) system and its long-term response to climate forcing. To supplement these data, we use a new reconstruction of December–February Niño-3 sea surface temperatures based on subtropical North American tree-ring records to investigate aspects of ENSO variability over the past six centuries (AD 1408–197...
متن کاملInferred changes in El Niño–Southern Oscillation variance over the past six centuries
It is vital to understand how the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has responded to past changes in natural and anthropogenic forcings, in order to better understand and predict its response to future greenhouse warming. To date, however, the instrumental record is too brief to fully characterize natural ENSO variability, while large discrepancies exist amongst paleo-proxy reconstructions of...
